Maintaining balanced swimming pool water starts with understanding a few basic principles.
In this Sonco Pools & Spas training video, we’re at the Water Test Center at our Loves Park location to begin our swimming pool water chemistry training.
The goal is to make pool chemistry as simple as possible. These basic principles apply whether you’re maintaining a small backyard pool or a custom in-ground swimming pool.
Before getting into specific water chemistry readings and adjustments, however, there are two important places to start: making sure the swimming pool is operating properly and learning how to accurately test the water.
Before adjusting swimming pool chemistry, make sure the basic anatomy of the pool is functioning properly.
That means having:
An operational pool pump
A good filtration system
Proper swimming pool circulation
If these basic systems aren’t in order, you’re starting your water chemistry maintenance from the wrong place.
Sonco recommends running the swimming pool pump for a minimum of eight hours per day during daylight hours.
The more the pump runs, the more opportunity the pool system has to remove debris and organic contaminants from the water, including leaves, worms, bugs, and other material that can contribute to water problems.
Some pool owners have variable-speed pumps that run 24 hours per day.
As explained in the training video, continuous operation with these systems provides the best scenario for good water chemistry.
Once the swimming pool is properly circulating, the next step is understanding how to test the water.
Pool test strips provide a quick and easy option. Dip the strip into the swimming pool water and use it to get a general range for several water readings.
For pool owners who want to become more accurate and consistent with their water maintenance, Sonco recommends learning how to use a drop test kit.
The video demonstrates a six-way Taylor test kit, described as an industry staple.
The kit includes instructions for performing the tests and provides accurate readings that can help pool owners better understand their swimming pool water.
The next step in Sonco’s water chemistry training is using the test kit to examine the most important pool-water readings, understand what those readings mean, and learn how to make adjustments for a healthy swimming environment.

Make sure the swimming pool is functioning properly. The training video specifically identifies an operational pump, good filtration, and proper general circulation as the starting point before moving into water chemistry.

Yes. The training video explains that increased pump operation helps remove debris and organic contaminants such as leaves, worms, and bugs that can contribute to swimming pool water problems.
The video explains that some customers with variable-speed pumps will run them 24 hours per day and describes this as the best scenario for good water chemistry.
Test strips are described as a quick and easy way to obtain a general range for several pool-water readings. For more accurate water testing and a better understanding of pool care, Sonco recommends learning to use a drop test kit.

Yes. The training explains that the basic water chemistry principles apply whether you have a small backyard pool or a custom in-ground swimming pool.
Proper circulation allows the swimming pool system to move water through its filtration system and remove debris and organic contaminants. The video establishes proper circulation as one of the basic requirements before beginning water chemistry adjustments.
The training begins the chemistry process by testing the swimming pool water. The test results provide the readings needed to understand the water and determine what adjustments may be necessary.
After establishing proper circulation and water testing, the training moves into the most important swimming pool water readings, what those readings mean, and how to make adjustments to achieve a healthy swimming environment.
