Swimming pool returns are the points where warm, clean water coming from the pool equipment is forcefully returned to the swimming pool. Depending on the pool, there may be anywhere from two to four returns positioned around it.
But which direction should those returns point?
In this Sonco Pools & Spas training video, we explain how to adjust the return eyeballs and why directing the water downward is generally the best practice for creating better circulation throughout the swimming pool.
After water travels through the swimming pool equipment, the returns bring that clean, warm water back into the pool.
Each return contains an adjustable “eyeball” that allows you to change the direction of the water flow.
Some pool owners point the returns upward in an attempt to push surface water toward the skimmer. However, the approach demonstrated in this video is to direct the return flow more toward the bottom of the swimming pool.
Directing the return eyeballs downward helps create a bottom-to-top circulation pattern.
This is especially useful when returning heated water to the swimming pool. Because heat rises, directing the warm water toward the bottom allows it to rise and distribute more uniformly throughout the pool.
Not every return can simply be pointed straight toward the floor.
In the pool demonstrated in the video, one return is positioned near a bench. Pointing that return straight down would cause the water to flow directly into the bench.
Instead, the eyeball is adjusted slightly to the side while still directing the water downward. This sends water through the staircase area, helping keep the surface clean and clear and preventing the stairs from becoming a circulation dead spot.
When there are no stairs or other obstacles in the way, the return eyeballs can be directed more directly toward the pool floor.
The overall goal is simple: use the swimming pool returns to encourage bottom-to-top water movement while avoiding dead spots in the pool’s circulation system.

Heat naturally rises. Directing warm water toward the bottom of the swimming pool allows it to rise and helps distribute the heated water more uniformly throughout the pool.
If pointing a return directly downward would cause the water to hit a stair or bench, the eyeball can be redirected slightly to the side while maintaining downward flow. The goal is to move water through the area and help prevent dead spots in the pool’s circulation.
