Swimming pool clarifier is a specialty water-care product that is often misunderstood and overused.
One of the most common misconceptions is that adding clarifier will automatically fix a cloudy swimming pool. As explained in this Sonco Pools & Spas water chemistry training video, that’s not what clarifier is designed to do.
Instead, think of swimming pool clarifier as a water polish for a pool that is already properly balanced and clear.
Very fine particles of material can remain suspended in swimming pool water.
Clarifier causes these tiny particles to clump together into larger particles. Once they’re larger, the swimming pool filtration system can remove them more effectively.
This allows the filter to capture finer particulate matter than it might otherwise remove on its own.
The result can be an additional level of clarity for someone who wants already-clear swimming pool water to look even more polished and glistening.
This is where clarifier is frequently misused.
Customers may see cloudy pool water and assume clarifier is the solution. However, the training specifically explains that clarifier is not a problem solver for improperly balanced pool water.
If a swimming pool is progressing from hazy to milky and eventually green, the underlying problem is usually related to a water chemistry imbalance.
Adding clarifier does not correct that imbalance.
Clarifier is best viewed as a finishing product.
Your swimming pool should already be properly balanced and the water should already be clear. Clarifier can then help remove finer suspended particles and provide an additional polish to the water.
If the pool is cloudy, first identify and correct the underlying water chemistry issue rather than relying on clarifier to solve the problem.

Clarifier can provide an additional polish to water that is already clear and properly balanced by helping the filtration system remove finer suspended particles.
Not if the cloudy water is caused by improper water chemistry. The training explains that clarifier is not a problem solver for chemistry imbalance and should not be used as a substitute for correcting the underlying water problem.
The training recommends thinking of clarifier as a water-polishing product for a swimming pool that is already properly balanced and clear but where you want an additional level of water clarity.
Clarifier is often overused because pool owners may reach for it whenever their water becomes cloudy. According to the training, hazy, milky, or green water is usually associated with a chemistry imbalance, which clarifier will not correct.
