How Filtered Water Travels Through the Heater, UV Ozone System and Salt Cell

After swimming pool water passes through the filtration system, its journey isn’t finished. The clean water continues through additional equipment before eventually returning to the swimming pool.

In this Sonco Pools & Spas training video, we follow that part of the circulation process and explain how water moves through the pool heater, UV ozone system, salt cell, and eventually back to the pool.

Filtered Pool Water Moves Through the Heating System

Once the water has been filtered, it travels toward the pool’s heating system.

The swimming pool demonstrated in this video uses a gas heater. However, some swimming pools may use a heat pump instead.

Water passes through the heating system before continuing to the next piece of equipment.

How a UV Ozone Pool System Works

On this particular swimming pool, heated water next travels through a UV ozone system.

As the water moves through the unit, it is exposed to UV light. As explained in the video, the UV light kills viruses.

The water is also exposed to ozone. Ozone acts as an oxidizer, helping the swimming pool oxidize organic contaminants and other material from the water.

Pool Water Then Travels Through the Salt Cell

After passing through the UV ozone system, the water travels through the swimming pool’s salt cell.

The system demonstrated uses a Hayward salt cell, which is common on Sonco swimming pools.

One useful feature of this cell is that the metal fins inside the unit are visible. This allows the pool owner to see whether the salt cell needs cleaning.

Salt cells do require maintenance, and cleaning the salt cell is covered separately in the Sonco pool training series.

Returning the Water to the Swimming Pool

After traveling through the salt cell, the water is ready to return to the swimming pool.

Depending on the pool system, that water can be directed to the pool returns, a waterfall, or another destination.

At this stage of its journey, the water is warm, filtered, and has traveled through the UV ozone system before being returned to the swimming pool.

Understanding this flow can make it easier to see how the different pieces of your pool equipment work together as one circulation system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does swimming pool water go after it passes through the filter?

In the system demonstrated in the video, clean water leaves the filtration system and travels through the pool heater before continuing through additional treatment equipment.

Does every swimming pool use a gas heater?

No. The swimming pool shown in the training video uses a gas heating system, but the video explains that some swimming pools may use a heat pump instead.

What does a UV ozone system do for pool water?

The water passing through the system is exposed to UV light, which the video explains kills viruses. It is also exposed to ozone, which acts as an oxidizer and helps oxidize organic contaminants and other material from the water.

Where is the salt cell in the pool circulation process?

On the system demonstrated, water travels through the salt cell after it has passed through the heater and UV ozone system. It then continues toward the swimming pool.

Where does the water go after passing through the salt cell?

After passing through the salt cell, the water can be directed back to the swimming pool through the pool returns or sent to a feature such as a waterfall, depending on how the system is configured.
